A mirror of lifestyles and consumption, our interior bears witness to the great social upheavals and technological advances of our society. Its history intersects and is intertwined with that of architecture, design and decorative arts but also with popular culture, the social and economic sciences.
From the second half of the 19th century, interior design became more modern, conveyed by Belgian magazines on architecture and decoration. The main vectors of a true “art of living”, these magazines show us a panorama of trends and currents from each era. These publications are indicative of a new way of thinking about interiors and will be the first way to disseminate the work of professional designers. Decorators, assemblers, interior designers and furnishing stores would thereby participate in the assimilation of interior design in our daily lives.
In the aftermath of the Second World War, the industrialisation of furniture manufacturing and the development of design made it possible to democratise decoration that thus becomes a consumer product. The aesthetics of the last decade oscillates between an ecological and responsible vision of the interior and the incarnation of a mode of consumption of objects and novelties.
